What happens when your ear drum burst??

Question: My neice has fluid oozing out of her ear and there also an odor. Shes not in any pain however she has been irritable for a couple days leading up to the oozing. has anyone ever heard of this.
Answers: I'm having ear trouble myself these days. I've been reading about it on the web site I've included below. It says that sometimes, the ear drum bursts, releasing the fluid and making the child feel better. (Burst ear drums usually heal up by themselves.) While most ear infections improve without any treatment, doctors prefer to use antibiotics to clear up severe cases.

I hope this helps and your niece is better soon.
sound like a ear infection to me. even if there is no pain.. stuff coming out of the ear is not good at all. She should see her doctor right away.
It sounds like she has a pretty bad infection, I would get to the doctor asap. Some infections can get so bad that they can cause hearing loss!
If your eardrum bursts, I believe you become deaf in that ear.
You can die. From an infection. Scar tissue also forms. She is deaf, well, if she lives, and you go to prison for child neglect. how sad, you should have taken her to a physician.
I burst an ear drum last summer. It hurt like hell BEFORE it burst, and for a couple hours afterward (until the ER docs gave me pain meds). Didn't hurt at all after the pain meds wore off.

Sometimes there is stuff oozing out - including blood. In my case, nothing came out (or it all got washed away in the water, as I was scuba diving at the time).

Most of the time, ear drums heal themselves in about 2 weeks. But not always - my uncle's never healed, and he's got some hearing loss in that ear (but not total loss).

If there's stuff oozing out, she should definetely see a doctor, no question!! Probably just a bad infection.
