Brother had heart surgery but is in denial??

Question: he is drinkin like 4 beers a day every other day. he is smoking ciggarettes too! please give me advice on what he is doing to himself so i can talk to him. please dont be smart a!@ about it
Answers: the drinking is only slightly a problem. The AHA reccomends 2 drinks/day as moderate intake for heart health. The smoking is a huge issue. Smoking cessation programs are available, the bottom line is...He is an adult and will make his own decisions. Good Luck. The Other risk factors to worry about are Diabetes, smoking, (age, sex-not modifiable), high lipids, He really needs an overall lifestyle change. Does he have any other support...a wife, etc...someone needs to help him stay on track? Anway...some dietary research and smoking cessation are a good start... He can not change all the habits at once.
He is well aware of what he is doing. This is his choice and no one is going to change his mind. When people are on self destruct, they themselves must decide to change things.
Don't you think his doctor has given him advice about drinking and smoking? He knows. He just doesn't want to give those things up. Try telling him how much it would hurt you and the rest of the family to lose him. Other than that, there's nothing you can do. Sorry.
The drinking is bad, the smoking is really bad. If your brother had a heart condition that was serious enough to need surgery smoking and drinking are going to cause further damage to his heart. This is serious stuff, he is killing himself and he needs to stop right away if he wants to live.
Tell you are tired of watching him kill himself.
he could be depressed. ask him or his partner about it
You have to tell him that he has a problem
It is very common for people who have had heart surgery to be depressed afterward --- especially if he had to go on the heart lung pump during the procedure. Ask him to speak to his cardiologist/ heart surgeon because you are concerned about him. They can put him on medication for depression (some of these medications also help with smoking cessation) This is something those medical professionals hear about all the time- and know how to deal with.
