Why do i have panic attacks when i read aloud??

Question: for 5 years i've been having panic attacks they are really annoying because i have to limit what i do like i can't read out-loud in english because i have panic attacks i can't talk to people about anything....... i've asked some people but they think its linked to me having severe OCD(Obsessive cumpolsive disorder) i go to the psychiatrist but my reading isn't getting better i like reading books but it's really lowering my levels in english im suppose to get level 6 and im getting level 4 because i can't read out-loud i really want my life back to normal i want to be able to read again
Answers: I dont think there's anything wrong with you, subconsiously you're just uncomfortable with reading out loud because you fear you would make a mistake and not be able to pronounce a word and consequently people would laugh at you or tease you. You can't just hold yourself down because of such things, you have to try to read aloud in class, everyone makes mistakes people just don't pay attention to it, everyone's so worried that they will make a mistake in reading themselves that they hardly pay and attention to when otheers read. So I suggest reading ahead of the class when it comes to class reading, so read a section in your head first, if you feel comfortable than raise your hand and ask to read-- and read more often at home so you are familiar with difficult words, get those reading levels up! good luck m8 : )
Has the psychiatrist recommended Toast Masters?
That is a club that teaches people who have a fear of speaking in public to be able to do it with confidence. Everyone there (except the leader) has the same fear you do.

Trust a person who knows from experience.I can't read aloud either. The room start to feel small and it feels like you can't breath. Also you feel like the people in the room are laughing at you or stairing at you.I have panic attacks and I can't go into large crowds with a lot of people. It is called social anxiety.Talk to psychiatrist about social anxiety.
Public speaking is a common fear, and reading out loud is a form of public speaking.

Can you read out loud when you are by yourself ? How about recording yourself ?

Could you buy a recorder from Best Buy, Circuit City, or Radio Shack for under $50... Tell them that you want an inexpensive recorder for only personal use, that you can use in the car during commute to record ideas... You only need 30 -60 minutes of good quality. They will probably have to show you something with 4 - 8 hours. That's OK.

Now, turn on the recorder and just read out loud for 30 minutes. Then, play it back. Get used to how funny you sound. Everyone sounds that way to themselves. But listen to how you sound when you read, and try to improve it, until you are comfortable.... Then see if that helps with reading in class.

After you are comfortable, you might make an appointment with the teacher and bring the recorder. Play it back to show her your improving reading skills and ask her if she can help you with the anxiety. She should at least be able to let you practice a specific section before class...
when people put too much importance on an activity, they can panic while doing it because they are afraid of failure.

try reading out loud alone. read out loud alone to music that you enjoy, music that relaxes you. do this everyday until you feel comfortable.

then, read out loud with one person in the room. this person must be someone you are 100% comfortable with. this person is someone who would NEVER make fun of you.

play the music in the background (the same music you played when you read alone). read outloud to this person as often as possible. when you feel comfortable, add another person you feel comfortable with.

continue in this way, adding people, until you are entirely comfortable.
at some point, i suggest reading in front of a non-threatening stranger.

when you feel confident at one stage, move to the next stage of stress, until you feel confident in all situations.

all of this will take time. you must be very patient, give yourself a long time to recover. you have had problems for five years. so you can't expect to recover instantly.
Hi! I’m so sorry to hear you’re feeling bad. Anxiety about reading out loud is very common. If you want to try some self-help, the following steps should help eliminate (or significantly reduce) your panic attacks and OCD:

1. Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks and OCD. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear...

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resource...

I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!
I also suffer from this, infact my phobia is so bad i leave the room in lessons when asked to read out loud with some lame excuse. I have no fear of standing up in front of people and performing infact I play guitar in a moderatley successful band ( in which wierdly I do some singing). I take English in school and have grown accustomed to both of my teachers reading most of the stuff outload themselves however one of my teachers is leaving and I fear next year I may have to do some reading. This is the first time I have ever told anyone about my phobia, however my voice has trembled when readind aloud so people must know, infact I have even been asked if I'm OK afterwards which is not only patronising but puts you in the spotIight once again. I'm sure my parents would be supporting but i just felt stupid for being so scared about such a smal thing, however reading this thread has made me feel differently. I can not offer you any answers on overcoming your fear but I can offer comfort in the fact that your not alone.
mabe it is anxiety your dealing with
You need to tell your doc that you are having this problem and that it's causing you problems and it won't go away. If he won't help you, see a different doc.
You havent got severe ocd. i work in a school and i work with people with ocd all day. we are in a special unit.frankly you are worrying over nothing. a level 6 in english and only getting a 4 believe me just because you cant read aloud you wont go down 2 levels. calm down-take a deep breath and ead. change your phychiatrist.
Do you think it is social anxiety?
some time i also have the panic attack i also cannot read Eng.when i feel too pressure,i thing u also is it ,i suggest u relax ur mind, trying when on morning take some exercises
or try doing some yoga, cause that can relax ur emotion
I don't how old you are or how open minded you might be but... I'm thinking you had a tramatic experience that is hurting you. You are the conductor of your own train. Something along your journey of life kinked your train tracks.
I think hypnosis might help.
I bet you have a great speaking voice and you'll get it back no matter what the answer.
It depends on what you are reading.
