Does anyone share my terror of cotton balls or know what it's called? (I'm so bad, they cause panic attacks.)?
Question: I'm dead serious... ever since I was little, I couldn't touch them, and as I got older, I actually developed such an extreme fear that I have a physical reaction from just thinking about them. I avoid them in stores, and don't allow them in my home. I know a lot of my friends think it's hysterical, but I'd rather stand on the top of a skyscraper, surrounded by spiders and snakes, than ever have to see a ::shudders:: cotton ball... again. Yuck.
Answers: Fear of cotton balls is one of the few phobias that has yet to be officially named. The proposed name is simply cotton-phobia.
Here are some testimonials from others online who share your same phobia:

It is a lot more common that you would think actually.
dude your strange. it is cotton from a plant.. A PLANT. its not going to kill you or anything. it cant even move
Well I have this thing where when I touch cotton, it get this feeling like theres nails scraping a chalk board and I cant stand it. But I wouldnt call it a fear.
Had a girlfriend like that, she absolutely would NOT touch
a cotton ball.
Phobias like the one you describe are very treatable. Systematic desensitization, for example, has helped many folks overcome specific phobias. I encourage you to seek out a psychotherapist who can help you work through this phobia and help you gain a sense of control and mastery over it.
Best of luck,

Is there anything in your childhood that would look or feel like cotton balls? You may have had an experience with something that now is repressed and is causing you this extreme fear of cotton balls. If you can't remember anything, maybe you should talk to a psychologist to get to the bottom of your fear. Some fears we have aren't always from the thing we fear, but something that subconsciously represents similar attributes to what we fear.
I'm scared of mailboxes. I think that's weirder than a cottonball.
I totally don't think that this is a laughing matter. It is very serious in fact. But why don't you like them? Is it the texture? I for one do not have a fobia of cotton balls, but to make you feel better, I will tell you my fobias. I have arachnafobia, or fear of spider. I always fear getting barried alive. When someone scratches their nails on a chalkboard, I cringe. I love rollercoasters, but always have the thought in my mind that I will fall out and die. Now I don't know if any of this helped, but don't feel that you are insane because of your cottonball situation-you are only human! :^D
This is something I truly have never heard before. And I can imagine that people think that it's hysterical. But to you it's a very real situation.
I don't know really what to say except that you're doing the right thing by staying away from cotton balls. Fortunately, they aren't really all around us in daily life, so you can keep a distance. I don't like cotton balls either because they don't absorb well and are really a verfy inefficient way to get things done (e.g. make up removal). I use only cotton squares or rounds at home.
I envy your courage with snakes and spiders though! And especially that you would have no problem standing on top of a skyscraper and looking down. I personally hate to look down when I'm high up.
PS: Not all cotton balls are made out of cotton, Some are made out of synthetic fiber, which has a creepy feel, if you ask me. Just want to ask you this question: maybe it's synthetic-made balls that are a problem? I don't know. I'm not an expert. Just some food for thought.
I know I will never understand your fear. But it just seems so wierd, how I could bath in cotton balls if I felt like it and you might have a heart attack if you did. I find it so strange how the mind reacts differently to differnt things. for example, i am afraid of hieghts yet people go sky diving from thousands of feet.
Though I don't share a terror about cotton, I do have serious concerns about the processing of cotton today--with genetic bio-engineering and scientific tinkering as well as with US trade policies and cotton farm subsidies that are devastating poor people across the globe. (1) Scientists need to leave what was naturally perfect alone, rather than to tinker, making genetic alterations that could lead to untold disaster. That holds true with any genetic bioengineering, including corn and wheat; and (2) US trade policies and farm subsidies are wreaking havoc on the economies of poor nations unable to compete. Perhaps your terror was foretelling. Don't fear cotton as it as is as natural as honey, but you need to look for organic.
awl :(:(
i'm sorry - i don't know what to do, but i'd say you completed the first step: admitting you have a problem. now you need to find a way to get okay with cotton balls. :)
do q tips freak you out to..?
